Okay, maybe it hasn't been so easy. You've been enjoying a relatively pleasant time here with your fellow gods and Athena, only for a disgruntled Titan to seemingly pull the rug out from under that.

Despite the immediate threat from a hidden foe, you've managed to stave off their first attack. However, even if the grass may seem greener this week, or the sky a bit clearer, Athena can barely hide her troubled feelings. If this experiment is to be a success, what has to happen to make it that way?

[ Dutifully, Alex gathers up everything he can into his arms. ]

I'll need to take another trip to get anything else.

[ Like, not that she thinks bad of Alex, she just genuinely wasn't expecting it. ]

[ Man, the surprises just keep coming in this conversation. There's an awkward pause like she clearly isn't used to people apologizing to her about this. ]

I mean, I know how the hell it sounds like, so I wasn't going to hold it against you either way. Unless you tried to kill me, but I'd say it's not an entirely unreasonable response either.

[ Alex cannot put an awkward hand on her shoulder or something like that because his arms are full of branches. But please know the emotion is there. ]

I'm not gonna kill you, jeez. I don't...think I've got it in me to kill anyone. [ this is a funny conversation to have before tomorrow. ] ...But I know what it's like when you've got...somethin' you can't control and everyone...looks at you like you're some kinda dangerous freak.

Please don't tempt fate in these circumstances. [ Velvet doesn't even know what's about to happen tomorrow, she's just saying this on principle because in her experience, it rarely goes well. ] And...I can guess. [ Given how Alex reacted the other day. ] I don't supposed you signed up for it, though.

[ Alex lets out a breath. ]

...No. Though in hindsight, I should have expected it.

[ It's the sort of agreement that would inevitably have Consequences, after all.]

Screw hindsight. Look, I dunno the circumstances...but it sounds like you didn't sign up for this...death stuff anymore than I did.

[ Velvet feels that she probably shouldn't mention that it was, technically, told right to her face back then. She just hadn't actually understood until it was too late. ]

How long has it been for you?

[ Alex goes a little still, but. Well. ]

Uhh... It's a little...hard to tell for part of it, but- a-about a year I think?

[ Velvet raises an eyebrow, if only because the first part is rather curious. ]

...Five years, for me.

[rockymountaindie]

[ It's, uhhh. Uh. He's not elaborating. ]

Shit. I'm sorry. IS it just...is there any way to stop it? Beat it?

Well, I don't know about beating it. [ ...Is it even possible? She isn't sure. ] There is a way to keep all the ominous stuff from happening, but, uh...I can't say most people will find it agreeable.

Oh, you know, like making someone despair before killing them.

[ Like, she might be serious about this, but there's enough wry sarcasm that she also might not be? ]

[ Alex doesn't drop the branches. But he sure does go incredibly and uncomfortably still.

In a low, rough voice: ] What.

What the... How the hell's that any better?

That's the point, I think. There's no "better" choice; just one terrible choice and one that gives you relief even though it's also horrible.

Well why the fuck— [ He grits his teeth and cuts himself off, taking what he intends to be a calming breath. ]

What's it for? Just Death being some petty fucker? You said it's not really an...entity, where you're from.
