Week one

You've all met Athena, and she's made her point quite clear. She's fully committed to making this world better, and you're the ones who agreed to lend a hand. Something she's obviously quite thankful for.

It's really not so bad around here. Despite the sky, and the state of the land, things are fairly calm. You've got plenty of time to get used to it, and each other. Maybe this'll be easier than it seems.

literarybehemoth: he is looking grumpy and kind of has his arm resting on a rock a bit lazily. (i suppose i will listen.)

Neither do I, but it was hard to avoid the turn of phase.

[hehe.]

...In any case, I am a manul. For what it's worth, the closest thing we have to humans where I am from are apes, so me being a talking cat is not particularly unusual where I am from. At a certain point, I am certain everyone here will understand this.

[hehe.]

My apologies for the tired question, then! Where I'm from, we have animals that are incapable of speech - or at least speech we understand - and monsters, some of whom can communicate. That was my closest guess, but it would seem that our worlds differ greatly! How fascinating... Ah, I could spend hours questioning everyone about the worlds they come from...

[Is this a thing he won't do and thus a regret, or an ominous promise?? You decide!!]

Anyway, what shall I call you?

[Yes, he looked at the statues so he knows what it says, but let's at least have a little decorum here.]

It is interesting, I have to admit. There are creatures without reason where I am from, but they are specific kinds of creatures, you know? Insects and the like. I suppose you having multiple kinds of people at least feels more familiar than... just humans, which seems to be the case elsewhere.

[it's SO weird.]

Ah, in any case, you may call me Manulov.

Precisely. The idea of a world with only humans seems so bizarre, truly... We have deimori, like myself, elves, and sentinels as well, making up the Spoken races who live in "civilized" society, although monsters have their own separate societies and hierarchies. My research touched on monsters for a time, so much of what I learned is not common knowledge, but even so...

[Ah, so much to learn, but he's getting distracted. Zvei shakes his head as if to clear it and tries to get back on track.]

Manulov, then. Pleased to meet you! You may call me Zvei.

[He gives a nod of recognition at the exchanging of names!]

Ah, I see. It does, doesn't it? As for us... well, there are definitely societies, but honestly, everything is fairly fragmented. Generally the animals that live on land know what is going on with each other, and... well, there are the creatures that live in the ocean and in fresh water. Creatures like otters and seabirds and such have historically acted as go-betweens among those communities, although extremely recent advancements in technology have allowed creatures that have historically only been able to survive in water to make their way onto land. It is all very exciting, though of course you have some groups of intermediaries worrying that the market they have cornered is no longer exclusively theirs.

Fascinating...

[Zvei taps his fingers against his lower lip, thinking.]

You said there are no humans where you're from, correct? Are there any sorts of monsters? Things like... dragons, golems, sirens, or lamia?

Not outside of legends, no. I am not familiar with most of those, but dragons do occur in legend, and they tend to be gods or the children of gods and the like.

How fascinating! There are some legends that tie Scel, one of our gods who governs the element of water, to dragons, but not all dragons are water-aligned. In fact, I've heard of them encountered in branches of the Aeli belonging to the other gods.

...Anyway, they are very real threats where I'm from. We have the Spoken races - humans and the like - as well as animals and monsters. The latter are almost entirely dangerous to the Spoken, so we know very little about their societies and the like in general. Animals are deemed to have lesser intelligence, though I'll admit I have never done much research into them, so I can't say for certain.

[Maybe we just have a whole secret world of talking cats and he never figured it out, you never know!!!]
literarybehemoth: he is neutrally looking perhaps a little curious. not particularly grumpy. (how curious.)

[personal profile] literarybehemoth 2025-07-09 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I would hope animals would make their intelligence known, if they had it. I would certainly not wish to be looked down upon just because people could not understand me.

...But that is interesting. There are a number of creatures in folklore with different features and body plans that are commonly regarded to be "dragons," but there is no way to prove any sort of relation between them or if they would simply be different creatures that have been given the same colloquial name.

Indeed! What I wouldn't give to have the time to study such things in-depth... [SIGH.] But I suppose we do have more pressing matters to attend to here. Once we determine how exactly we're supposed to proceed. It didn't occur to me to ask Lady Athena...

I would hope she would give us more direction sooner or later. If everything is on the up-and-up, this seems like an adjustment period before we actually get to work so that we do not cause things to go horrendously wrong.

[personal profile] necromants 2025-07-12 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, precisely. That does seem to be how things are going, but we can't entirely rule out that there's more to it.

[Some of us are waiting for the other shoe to drop, so to speak.]

Not that I see any reason to panic over such things, of course.

[do you think this guy even CAN panic because look at how chill he is.]

[personal profile] literarybehemoth 2025-07-14 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, certainly not. Panicking is always going to make things far worse than coming up with some sort of rational plan--or, at the very least, getting more information with which to form one.
