It's really not so bad around here. Despite the sky, and the state of the land, things are fairly calm. You've got plenty of time to get used to it, and each other. Maybe this'll be easier than it seems.

The latter, usually. Some types of monster can actually speak in our tongue! They tend to be quite rare, though.

Is the barrier an issue of physiology or lack of contact?

[like are we talking species with funky vocal chords and no tongue or have people just not dropped time into translating languages or both]

A little of both, as there are monsters of all types. Some fit the former better - most of the more common monsters fall into that category - but monsters that remain within the Aeli's branches tend to fall into the latter. Most adventurers who dare set foot in those places are prepared to fight for their lives against the monsters, so it isn't as though we have a particularly good understanding of the monsters within and their societies. In fact, such research is remarkably rare. It was one of the first things I looked into when I arrived in Emirre, and I was astounded by how little I could actually find!

Fascinating. There are a few non-human species in my- universe, I guess?

Not all of them can speak the common language, but we've found ways to communicate.

Given your reactions earlier, I'd assume magic is not common in your world? Or is it not present at all?

Nothing we CALL magic, certainly. But a few things I've seen- Athena's changing appearance yesterday, for instance, I can think of a few ways that might have been achieved through technology. Projected light and images, we call them holograms.

Oh, how fascinating! Aelios has a larger focus on magic instead of technology, though I have heard there are some ancient ruins that seem more advanced than our own societies... What else have you all created besides these holograms? Any that you're particularly fond of?

Oh, no, I can fight, I just prefer not to. I've never found fighting particularly fun or interesting, and it's merely something I've had to do as a part of my job. Healing is more interesting!
