You've all met Athena, and she's made her point quite clear. She's fully committed to making this world better, and you're the ones who agreed to lend a hand. Something she's obviously quite thankful for.

It's really not so bad around here. Despite the sky, and the state of the land, things are fairly calm. You've got plenty of time to get used to it, and each other. Maybe this'll be easier than it seems.

Definitely nothing like this. [he waves a hand at what she's done so far] It comes with certain recipes right out of the box, but for everything else, you have to program in the recipe yourself. Then when you ask for it to your specifications, the replicator will replicate it, and then you can remove it from the replicator and enjoy.

It takes some time and tweaking the code to get a recipe exactly how you want it, but a good cook can figure out how to make something delicious, nutritious, and cost-effective.

What kind of raw material does it need to work with? It can't just pull food out of nothing.

No, but it can create matter out of energy. I couldn't tell you exactly how it works beyond that, but I know how to program recipes or blueprints for things.

That's definitely well beyond anything we've created in my world.

It can't replicate everything, of course. There are some things that just won't replicate, like latinum, dilithium, antimatter, that sort of thing. Or, well, you can replicate dilithium, but it can't do it correctly without expending more energy than its worth as a fuel by a significant amount.

That being said, they are why space stations and ships don't need to rely on oxygen supply tanks anymore. As long as you have energy connected to the replicators, they can function as a life support system in an emergency by replicating breathable air.

The applications would be- well, not limitless, as you say, but close to it. No wonder humans have spread so much farther in your world.

And still spreading. Starfleet's got a whole set of ships whose purpose is just to go as far as they can and see what they can find.

Oh, that part's still accurate. We've explored most of the current galaxy, but there's a few dark corners we haven't poked at yet.

And finding ways to better terraform previously uninhabitable places is a subject of aggressive research by more than a few companies.
