Week one

You've all met Athena, and she's made her point quite clear. She's fully committed to making this world better, and you're the ones who agreed to lend a hand. Something she's obviously quite thankful for.

It's really not so bad around here. Despite the sky, and the state of the land, things are fairly calm. You've got plenty of time to get used to it, and each other. Maybe this'll be easier than it seems.

I knew a few of those, at least.

[Honestly kind of a miracle she knew at all, given.]

[She glances again between Astarion and the statue.]

But yes, I'd say that's a fairly accurate likeness.

[He gazes back up at it.

In truth, he's not sure what to think. His recollection of his own image was just a vaguely defined blob.]

...You have my thanks.

...For the confirmation?

What else? I haven't seen my own face in a very long time. Even with the ilithid meddling that enabled me to walk in the sun for a time, my reflection didn't return.

Hm-

[She ponders, for a moment, not being able to see herself for hundreds of years.]

[...well clearly SHE would be fine, but it could potentially wear on someone with a skill issue or something]

Consider it a small favor if you must, I guess.

[That's probably a "you're welcome", if you squint.]

Illithid being-?

[Oh, right. Nobody else is from his world.]

Mindflayers. Nasty abominations with faces like a squid.

Dare I ask how literal the name "mindflayer" is?

They reproduce by putting tadpoles inside of people's brains.

[He says, pointing to his own head.]

That I wasn't changed into one of them within a matter of days was the result of a very specific circumstance.

[She sucks in an uncomfortable breath.]

I'm guessing this change isn't a strictly mental one, from the way you're talking?

Oh, no. The person who turns into a mindflayer physically turns into one, too. In all of their disgusting, squidlike glory. And then that person becomes part of a hivemind that exists to serve the elder brain.

Disgusting but effective.

[Disgustingly effective, maybe.]

Good work on escaping that, I guess.

[personal profile] pariunt 2025-07-13 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
Indeed. Slaying an elder brain is no easy task.

[A short beat.]

Okay, I have to admit I'm picturing a very old and wrinkly squid person covered in life support prosthetics and with a disproportionately huge head, but that can't be what you this actually is.

["Life support machine" is very evocative, but he can't quite picture it.]

Oh no. It's a giant brain. An enormous conglomeration of countless mindflayers and all of their victims. So intelligent it can predict your every move long before you've ever reached the point to even make your decision.

And the one I and my companions fought had a Netherese crown. In short, it was impossibly intelligent and possessed the powers of a god.

[He laughs at the absurdity of it.]

Really, I'm still not sure how I survived it all.
