Week Six

You've survived, for lack of better wording, the latest week of trials and tribulations. This one had been more costly than most: Typhon's machinations have brought your group to nearly half the size it was when Athena first brought you to this island. Whether it ends with him or with you is still too soon to make out. One thing's for certain. Things cannot be allowed to continue as they are.

Speaking of continuing, the next floor has been revealed to you. Just how far down this island goes is a bit of a mystery, but you get the feeling that you're close to something important. Maybe that thing Athena wanted you to find before Typhon does. You can ruminate on that as you watch the waters below. Waves still lap at the cliffs, but it all seems lower than it did weeks ago. Like the ocean itself is shrinking...

[Quark huffs at that, waving a hand] It's fine, don't stress about it so much. Once I figured out what both of them wanted to it, it hasn't been too rough. Except for this week, but we'll figure it out.

[ Alex realizes, with a start, that this is information they may not have. ]

Listen- that's- he's not workin' alone. He's beholden to something, to someone, someone who needs us- or, you, I dunno if we're still included- someone who says we're key to a plan.

[Quark's eyes narrow at that]

A plan, huh? Where'd you hear this from?

[because maybe it can give them a clue as to who that is--]

It would explain how he's been able to pull some of this off.

We can hear him sometimes. Usually...after someone dies.

[ Alex closes his eyes. Thinking hard. Recalling- ]

First, it was just him, about Athena, preventing his victory. And- and talking about...waiting at someone's call.

Then, it was another voice. One like...like running water, almost, it was hard ta really make out, like- like a voice in other voices... It... She? She- she said he failed. He tried to say we were all- [ ... ] That he was the one with the power over us, but it sounded like they were arguin' about that? It got cut off.

The third time, it was just him. He was sayin'... He couldn't wait longer. That she would see him "reduced to nothing," he said...

Whoever this is, he can't do it without her. But he wants to. He hates that he's gotta depend on someone else.

[Hm. REALLY don't like that.]

...he mentioned a "Mother Gaia" last trial. Seemed kind of sensitive about it.

Gaia is the personification of the Earth. She's the one who birthed all the Titans.

I sort of knew the first part. ...Probably should have guessed the second. Sounds like it could be her? Earth had a lot of water before it went to shit, right?

Does that mean that the jokes were not as hurtful as they were intended to be...? Or were they more hurtful?

Hm. I'm gonna go with more.

[She thinks a little.]

That whole mother Gaia- would be horrified at the ground you step on thing sure sounds like someone trying really hard not to cry and trying harder not to sound like it.

She. [Quark chews on that thought] I don't know much about all of the myths around here, but I know who does.

[Quark turns his head a bit. Chances are Cerejeira isn't far anyway]

Jeira! Hey! Alex heard something from Typhon; see if it lines up with any of that Greek Myth stuff you're always talking about.

I'm not always talking about it...

[it just comes up a lot here! weird, that!]

Anyway, um, Gaia could be relevant, she's Typhon's mother. [like Vanity brought up just now.] But I wouldn't immediately associate her with water. To some degree, I mean-- the Earth is mostly water.

Still, there are plenty of deities and the like associated with water. For Titans specifically, there's Tethys...

Does the guy like his mom?

...If you remember a river, could it be something like the River Lethe...?

[ Does this help narrow down whom this other party is? She isn't sure. ]

Where I'm from, it's where ghosts pass into on the way to reincarnation. I don't know if that's exactly how it works here, but if where you are is some kind of afterlife, it wouldn't be surprising for something similar to be there.
