Afterparty
[After the execution finishes and Wendy is dragged down into the Earth by that absolute horrific monstrosity of a creature and Typhon gives his goodbye, Quark will stand there for a long moment in the silence, before announcing, in a voice that wavers while trying to go for neutral:]
The bar’ll be open. Sitting around alone isn’t going to help anyone. [he turns to look at Ferdinand] Ferdinand, you’re with me. I need someone to move the table.
[and, taking Cerejeira’s elbow, he’s going to head out of the Arena. So...post trial, the Eatery’s been moved into bar configuration by Ferdinand and Quark. There’s been several of the extra togas gathered and folded to be used as blankets. There are snacks from the pantry brought out and placed on plates and in bowls and left out to eat. The bar is open, but so is the kitchen, if anyone wants to make something.
Both Ferdinand and Quark can be found behind the bar, the latter attempting to teach the former how to use the replicator he’s now got back there in addition to the other drink components. At least it’s keeping them busy. They’re both there to serve drinks, however.
The door is open.]

Then you should have little reason to worry until you can return home. What is "Sin", though? Some sort of threat facing your world or something?
no subject
Sin is a monstrous beast that haunts Spira, unleashing devastation upon anything in its path. It is only thanks to the summoners that humanity has been able to survive, for a summoner's aeon is the only thing capable of doing Sin harm.
[Just normal things, you know!]
no subject
What is an aeon? A type of magic or ability?
no subject
[He swirls the wine in his glass for a moment.]
As you might imagine, there are not many who are capable of becoming summoners.
no subject
[There's magic similar in concept to summoning, in giving form to creatures made by the caster's mana, but Zvei is by no means an expert in such fields and can't even begin to try to compare the two. So he'll leave that thought aside.]
What is the process like to become a full-fledged summoner? I imagine there's quite a bit of training involved.
no subject
[Feeling like there's a part of your mind suddenly missing? Very odd, and more than a little disconcerting. Not that he needs aeons to fight, but that lack of connection is... hmm.]
Summoners must be proficient in the use of regular magic before they are allowed to undergo training. One can begin at any age as long as they show the necessary potential... they begin their training in the art of summoning as an apprentice summoner in a temple, and when they have demonstrated sufficient ability, they undergo their first trial.

[Then, realizing that probably sounds like a euphemism for something terrible:]
It is exactly as it sounds-- the summoner must pray to the fayth of that temple and attempt to form a bond. If the fayth recognizes the summoner's wish and the strength of their resolve, they will grant them their aeon.
It is not the training that weeds out many would-be summoners, but the trials.
no subject
[Though something about this is striking him as a little strange, and after he takes a sip of wine he brings it up.]
Why did you agree to come here, Seymour?
[Surely your world needs you too much to leave...?]
no subject
I seek the strength needed to save Spira once and for all.
no subject
"God of Salvation" indeed. I hope you're successful in your attempt, then.
[He's noticed that look, and can't help but wonder... But maybe this isn't the time or place to keep prying too deep. Not with the others around to hear, anyway.]
no subject
As do I, for Spira's sake. The spiral of suffering and destruction must be put to an end.

Surely those are no small threat, if they are anything like the fiends from Spira. Do they often come near the towns?
no subject
To most ordinary people, they are a tremendous threat, though compared to the monsters living deep within the Aeli's branches, they're quite weak and pathetic. These labyrinthine structures are extensions of the World Tree, scattered throughout Aelios, and are full of mana, thus making the monsters far stronger.
no subject
[Because surely a tree could not be so large as to have something resembling a labyrinth within it? But then again, considering some of the things that exist in Spira, that isn't entirely out of the realm of possibility.]
no subject
Like the branches - separate parts of the Aeli scattered throughout the world, but on a much smaller scale - the Aeli is a massive, towering tree-like crystalline structure with insides that don't quite seem to fit what one would expect. Mana warps the very world around one that enters, so mapping out the inside can be quite the tricky task! There are plenty of guilds eager to do just that though, and profit off of whatever can be found within the branches, much less the Aeli itself! Ruby Dawn was hoping to capitalize on such a thing, but well... unsurprisingly, the Aeli was far too dangerous a place to allow people to enter so freely.
[i am so sorry about all the Yapping he's doing.]
me just absolutely HOWLING at this entire thread now
I see... there are always those who are willing to take risks if it will benefit them, I suppose. But there must be a balance, and measures imposed to protect the safety of those who wish to challenge the unknown.
[But his true fascination is...]
Tell me, how were you able to pierce the barrier? Magic, or something else?
rng really turned this hilarious in hindsight, huh
[oh god no he's gonna get started and then NEVER STOP.]
The barrier surrounding the Aeli was like nothing anyone had ever seen before - the branches weren't surrounded by any sort of barrier at all, it was simply survival of the fittest for those who dared try to climb them. My theory was that the barrier could be pierced by a strong enough spell, but gaining the power to actually succeed in piercing it... well, that would be nearly impossible, even if we were to gather up every single strong mage we came across.
So I turned to a different source: mana. All beings have innate mana pools, with monsters and those with affinity for magic typically having larger ones. Deimori - like myself - and elves typically have the largest amounts of mana within Spoken races. Over the course of several years, I refined my theories through rigorous testing: mana does not disperse fluidly when one dies, instead coalescing into a rock or gemstone of some sort. Most of these are rather weak and useless, and sometimes they simply don't form at all - they can only be created when killed by something possessing far more mana and using magic that would cause the target's mana to unbalance itself.
Essentially, such things were mostly found by way of certain monsters killing adventurers in certain places. Other methods could possibly be found, but this was the best alternative.
[I mean he could've done some unethical science, but surely that didn't happen and thus we're moving on—!]
On the highest floors of the Aeli's Branches are the strongest monsters, and thus the most likely to create the highest powered versions of these stones, named magicaelite. Considering how pretty they are, even those who didn't understand their power would collect them, making my job of tracking them down fairly easy.
[And out from his pocket he pulls an onyx gemstone! It's a shimmering, black gemstone that catches the light in interesting ways, almost looking more crystalline than like any sort of true gemstone would. It's about the size of his hand, so it's a pretty hefty rock.]
I had to gather seven of these in total, one for each of the Aeli's Branches. With that power, it was enough to pierce the barrier in a specific location - and my calculations were of course correct, thus causing the entire barrier to shatter! Ruby Dawn was thus able to explore the Aeli afterwards.
[Usually Zvei sounds pretty excited about whatever he's yapping about, but this? This is a whole different level. This is truly, undeniably passion. He absolutely loves his work. And he's very proud of it, tyvm!!]
DID IT EVER
So it is magic transformed into a sort of tool, used in an unorthodox fashion.
[Ohhhh he really wants to touch that gemstone, but asking to do so would most likely be rude! That and he's not really certain just how it might react with his own magic.]
I must commend you-- that was quite clever thinking indeed. To think that such a small thing could possess enough power to take down an entire barrier when combined with more of its kind... most would see it as little more than a pretty bauble.
no subject
Correct! On their own, they serve as a sort of temporary power boost - that was what I used earlier to...
[He trails off with a small frown. Well. He used it to try to save Alex, and that didn't work. Maybe if he'd brought more of them with him today... but he'd only brought the one.]
...Regardless, Ruby Dawn was right to recruit me for this purpose, as my field of study was already in magicaelite before they approached me. It's not a common field of study, as it involves getting far too close to monsters. Of course, as a healer, I can just fix up any injuries I sustain, so it's hardly a problem for me!
no subject
And with something like that to amplify your healing, you have even less to worry about from monsters, allowing you to study things that ordinary people could not.
[Cause and effect-- perfect logic.]
It would seem you have chosen the perfect field in which to employ your talents.
no subject
[And yet for some reason... this doesn't sound nearly as certain and excited as he had earlier. Zvei slides the gem back into his pocket and takes a long sip of wine instead.]
no subject
... and yet there is something you still seek.
[There's no judgment, merely curiosity, if Zvei wishes to answer.]
no subject
[It's not a bad thing, and it's not like he hasn't spoken of it before... But still Zvei's mismatched eyes flick to the others in the bar before he lowers his voice a touch.]
I'm an amnesiac; I awoke without any of my memories around twelve years ago. I want to find out who I am, and reclaim what I lost.
