Week one

You've all met Athena, and she's made her point quite clear. She's fully committed to making this world better, and you're the ones who agreed to lend a hand. Something she's obviously quite thankful for.

It's really not so bad around here. Despite the sky, and the state of the land, things are fairly calm. You've got plenty of time to get used to it, and each other. Maybe this'll be easier than it seems.

[ There's a light, light chuckle from the doorway. Alex enters, though slowly, keeping his distance. ]

Doesn't work like that. Sorry. You're gonna have to cook if you want any... D'you say snail steaks?

[ He is, for the record, a lot less...wound up than yesterday. Still carrying an overwhelming aura of anxiety, but more down-to-earth. ]

I would cook, if this thing had any kind of input screen. [as for that other thing]

And yeah, I did. It's a popular dish! I usually get it once a week or so. It's more an evening kinda dish, but I was just hoping to get anything at all out of this thing. [he eyes Alex, tilting his head in question]

But apparently it doesn't work like that, huh? So how does it work?
rockymountaindie: (don't want to go by demon)

[personal profile] rockymountaindie 2025-07-08 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh. Snails I know aren't big enough to be more than a...an appetizer, or somethin', maybe a bunch all together? Space is wild.

[ He strolls on in. ]

Whatcha gotta do is make it yourself. You're saying input screen like- like that's s'pposed to do all the work for you? But if you wanted your...snail steak, you'd take a raw, uh, snail, and cook it up, in like...the oven, or microwave.

[ jesus kid do not talk about microwaving anything with the word "steak" in it you fucking gremlin ]

It doesn't do all the work for you. [Quark scowls, defensive] It just executes the code! If you can't write a good code, then you can't replicate anything that tastes good.

[he huffs, sulky, and waves a hand at the various stuff that's still strewn around the kitchen]

So this is more like the thing Sisko likes to do. Making food without a replicator on a couple thermal plates.

[ Alex snorts. Quark huffy is FUNNY. (this is going to stop being funny when the kitchen catches on fire but that's for another thread) ]

Alright, calm down, calm down, don't get all up in arms. If it's anything like learning BASIC, yeah, okay, sounds like your fancy future screens got their own quirks to work out.

[ hah. quirks, quark... ]

Thermal plates and shit like that sure does sound like cooking.

Yeah, he was always doing it, these command and upper management dinners. He'd do it all himself and it would take a lot longer than just using a replicator.
rockymountaindie: (and it doesn't last long)

[personal profile] rockymountaindie 2025-07-11 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
If a replicator's a...a computer program that can make food? Yeah, I sure bet it does. You telling me you've really never cooked the old-fashioned way? Not once?
latinumsbetter: (03)

[personal profile] latinumsbetter 2025-07-11 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Not just a computer program. It's a whole machine.

[though he huffs a bit at that question]

Definitely not. Do you know how hard it would've been to cook for an entire freighter like that? We'd have had to carry around way too much extra supplies, and then we would've had to dump cargo. Better to take the time to hand-code a recipe than waste that space.

I'm not talking about on a ship, or for a buncha people. I mean like... Don't they have hot pockets and microwaves in space?
latinumsbetter: (36)

[personal profile] latinumsbetter 2025-07-12 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
[......]

I can't imagine why anyone would want their pockets to be hot, and what some kinda wave would have to do with that.
rockymountaindie: (to try and understand)

[personal profile] rockymountaindie 2025-07-12 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
[ Ohhhh, Alex grins. ]

Time for a lesson on ancient culture, Quark. Come on, let's see... [ Alex digs around in the cold storage and... ] Aha! Hot...pita. Huh. 'Kay, it'll work.

[personal profile] latinumsbetter 2025-07-12 01:56 pm (UTC)(link)
[okay??? he's going to try and peer around Alex to see what he's looking for--though he leans back once he has what he wants]

And what's a hot pita exactly?
rockymountaindie: (there'll be one child born)

[personal profile] rockymountaindie 2025-07-12 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
[ He holds up a little- well, it's a hot pocket, but a pita, we got a little microwaveable friend. ]

This! It's a cold pita right now, but what you do is...

[ Walk up to the microwave. Enter the time. ...Take a very big step back and reach out with one stretched out finger to hit the power button (this one is just an Alex thing) and brrrrrrrr. ]

Wait 'til it's done cookin', and then you eat it.
latinumsbetter: (11)

[personal profile] latinumsbetter 2025-07-13 10:20 am (UTC)(link)
Uh huh. [Quark is giving the microwave SUCH a dubious look]

And this is how hyu-mons of your time cook most of their food or what?
rockymountaindie: (⚡ take me home‚ country roads)

[personal profile] rockymountaindie 2025-07-13 06:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Some of it. Microwave's handy for people who don't really know how to cook on their own, which is why I think you might like it.

[Quark folds his arms over his chest at that, huffing as he leans against the counter, sulky]

If we had a replicator, I'd be a great chef.
rockymountaindie: (and it doesn't last long)

[personal profile] rockymountaindie 2025-07-13 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. But we don't. So you're gonna have to make do.
