Bar Mingle: Week 2

Every evening at dusk (unless, for some reason, Quark is indisposed,) the Eatery transforms into Quark's Bar. The table becomes a bartop with chairs lined up on one side. Some of the extra chairs are placed along the wall behind the bar as a makeshift bench for ingredients, glasses, ice, and anything else. There are bowls of peanuts placed on top of the bar for free snacking. On one end of the bar there's a selection of pastries, fresh-baked by Lebkuchen, who might also be there.

As of Monday, there are some new additions to the bar. On one end of the table is a interesting look board game. Next to it is a plate of lebkuchen, left out for a specific bunch of fuzzy creatures that seem to like them.. In another corner is a roulette-esque kind of game.

In the rafters, there's a whole swarm of Zubats now, and one or two of them might come down to say hello. If they do, Quark is shooing them away again, but they only go back up to the ceiling.


Outside the door to the Eatery is a sign, handwritten, and further inside, the menu tacked up in a couple places behind the bar:

[the corner of Quark's mouth pulls upwards as Ferdinand laughs. It's not nearly his normal level of energy, but it's definitely something]

I thought that one was pretty good.

It is! Certainly the most noble of iced drinks.

[that widens the beginings of a smile just a bit]

What can I say, I've got a knack.

That you do!

[He takes a long drag from the cup, sighing softly. Even when he is at his lowest he finds some comfort in fine drink and company]

I did not see you outside earlier... did you stay safe in here?

Not in here. In my room.

[he'll admit that easily. He's not a fighter and all of them are aware of it.]

Good. If it happens again you and the other non-combatants should do the same.

It seemed the safest. That's what happened to Leb last time. A bunch'a vines grew over her door.

As for the others, good luck getting most of 'em to hide.

Ah... yes. This is not an army and they are not soldiers. There is no point trying to issue any commands. And if anyone was going to I feel they would listen to Aglaea over me in this.

[His words in isolation could seem bitter, but his tone is far from it. He respects her ruler-y aura]

[Quark huffs at that]

We're a guerilla force, if anything.

IF that!

[he chuckles softly]

...but if there is another invasion we should have a plan. A place for people to shelter at least. But ah, that is not good bar talk, is it?

[latinumsbetter]

[CASUAL SHRUG] It's talk at a bar, so it counts as bar talk. It's not the first time I've heard defense plans being made at my bar.

Now THAT is not very good for maintaining any information security!

[His inner Hubert voice is horrified]

You'd be surprised what people think is a private conversation in a bar. Turns out, a shady corner next to the wall isn't as quiet as they think.

[markofnobility]

It sounds like something from a thriller story. A bartender hears something he should not have, and has to stay on the run from spies out to kill him! Oh, but one of the spies slowly falls for him and can not bare to kill him when the time comes...

[he's getting really into it]

[okay maybe looks amused at that]

I know you're a general, but could I interest you in a career in writing holosuite programs?

[markofnobility]

You think I could? Ah, perhaps in kinder times.

[latinumsbetter]

[...kinder times. Yeah. Quark quiets for a moment at that, clearly thinking about something, before he leans in, resting his elbows on the bar, lowering his voice slightly.]

...remember when you told me that anyone could probably learn the magic from your world?

[markofnobility]

[ he leans in a bit as well, probably not nearly as subtle]

I do, yes.

What kinda magic are we talking about, exactly? I mean--what does it do?

[markofnobility]

Hm. Well there are two types of magic. Black and White. Traditionally called Reason and Faith, though those terms are falling out of favor with more.... forward looking groups.

[ aka those not associating it with religion so tightly anymore.

He rubs his fingers together and a wisp of flame forms between them.]

Black manipulates forces outside the body, like fire or air. While White uses those inside it and can heal. At least that is how it was explained to me.

[ he snuffs the flame out]

I am sure you can guess which is focused on more for war.

[he starts back a little bit when that wisp of flame forms, but he's starting to lean back in as Ferdinand explains. His jaw works a bit]

Yeah, I can.

[latinumsbetter]

[...]

...I'm a bartender. I'm not a fighter. Y'know, the whole hiding thing, that's what I'm more likely to do.

[which...Ferdinand himself had said earlier. Had approved of him doing so. Which honestly makes this marginally easier to talk about, though the discomfort remains.]

I'm not saying knowing this stuff would change that, but...

Sometimes you really don't get a choice where you end up in these kinda situations.

[markofnobility]

[ 'War makes theives out of saints' he thinks, though even he would not be so dense to think of Quark as a saint. But the saying hits closer then he likes, seeing people here that have not had to take up arms before now so imperiled. This was exactly the kind of thing he is supposed to work to avoid. It makes his heart ache and his belly churn with acid.

Or maybe that's the cocktail.]

It is no different from keeping a dagger in your boot. And much harder to disarm. It is only good sense considering the circumstances...

[ and he doesn't think Quark could learn a melee weapon fast enough to matter. But that would be rude to say outloud]

Yeah.

[he doesn't like it, but it's the reality of things]

Especially since it's not like I can get a phaser here.
