Week one

You've all met Athena, and she's made her point quite clear. She's fully committed to making this world better, and you're the ones who agreed to lend a hand. Something she's obviously quite thankful for.

It's really not so bad around here. Despite the sky, and the state of the land, things are fairly calm. You've got plenty of time to get used to it, and each other. Maybe this'll be easier than it seems.

You're gonna make yourself deaf if you keep the yellin' up.

[And then there's this asshole, perching himself on the count, watching the sad comedy hour show starring the main star from the stars, Quark.]

D'ya not know how to use an oven?

[Rhetorical question, he already knows the answer he's basically offering to help in a roundabout way]

[he scoffs at that first part] It'll take a lot more than some yelling to make me go deaf.

[he glances at Ranma perching on the counter, pausing for half a moment to give him a bemused look because what are you doing up there]

If by oven, you mean this thing--[he waves a hand at the oven lmao]--then no, I don't. It doesn't even a panel to input recipes.

[O b s e r v i n g]

Panel? [oh. right, space stuff.] When you want to 'input' recipes, you get a cookbook and some ingredients. That's how hyu-mons [saying that exactly how Quark put it] usually do it.

[Half of that has been done, he sees. Though... Ranma isn't quite certain this stuff'll be able to use for snail steaks. Ew.

He gets off the counter like a normal human being and looks over the oven. It's more modern than the oven Tendo Dojo owns, but he gets the basic gist of it. Wasn't like it's rocket science.]

See these? [Pointing the dials, while opening the door] You slide food in, turn the knobs to the right temperature, and let it bake for however long it needs to. Easy-peasy!

[Quark glances at Ranma at that pronunciation, and the corner of his mouth twitches just a little bit. As for all that.]

Easy-peasy, huh? If it's so easy, you do it, hot shot.

[There's a simple joy Ranma gets seeing people get their feathers all ruffled. It's music to his ears! And oh-ho-ho! That's a challenge if he's heard one!]

Fine then, I will. I was planning on grabbing a bite anyway.

[Swiping one of those knives, Ranma takes a gander at the assortment of ingredients Quark has laid out. Hmm, what to bake...]

What were you trying to make here?

I dunno, I just grabbed some things from the pantry incase this thing--[he waves a hand at the oven]--needed an example to scan so it could replicate it.

[Heh, grabbing the first things they could to throw together for a dish... It reminds him of an uncute tomboy natural disaster in the kitchen from home. She's probably tearing up anything she can get her hands on to find him. He hopes.......

Bah! Now's not the time to be focusing on mushy feelings or homesickness, he has a 'challenge' to make something that isn't mush! Settling on a simple pasta dish, Ranma turns the dial on the stove and kneels down to rifle around a cabinet for any sauce. Quark's talk of what a replicator does gets him to turn his head with a hint of awe and astonishment in his eyes. That... actually sounds fucking awesome.]

Man, who knew space could have something so convenient? If we had that, we'd never have to worry 'bout supplies running low again. Would cut down on a lot of trainin' though...

[As he muses that to himself, he produces a jar of tomato sauce onto the counter. Ranma goes over to the zucchinis and eggplant, knife in hand. And in one swift motion, starts speedily slicing and dicing the produce into bite-sized pieces in record time. All without leaving a mark on the countertop.]

Oh, yeah, it's real convenient, especially out in deep space or on long journies. [well, if Ranma's going to take over the cooking, Quark is going to find a place to lean on the counter to watch]

Really cuts down on the amount of supplies you need to take with you, not to mention on air tanks.
catsgothistongue: (Thinking out loud)

[Ranma pays attention to Quark's words while he gets to baking. Throwing all of the prepped ingredients onto a pan, sliding that in the oven. He spins around, closing the oven door shut with his foot, sitting on the appliance, letting it bake.]

Air tanks? Whaddaya need those for?

[he always assumed that if aliens were real they could breathe in space. though then again those are the rules in the movies and books. real life often than not can be shockingly different]
latinumsbetter: (23)

[personal profile] latinumsbetter 2025-07-13 10:04 am (UTC)(link)
There isn't any breathable air in space, so if you run out, you're in trouble. But with a replicator, as long as you have energy, you can make air.
catsgothistongue: (Guess we're doin' this?)

[personal profile] catsgothistongue 2025-07-14 03:02 am (UTC)(link)

Ahhh...

[Ranma doesn't know enough about science to ask if replicating air from nothing as it runs out would feasibly work. That, and Quark's his only frame of reference for how sci-fi alien technology operates so he's just gonna take his word for it.]

So do you wear spacesuits like astronauts do? And travel 'round in rockets?

[Criss-crossing his legs on the counter with childish intrigue, cause tbh? He's actually a little interested... And talking helps the pass the time it takes for the pasta.]
latinumsbetter: (20)

[personal profile] latinumsbetter 2025-07-14 12:02 pm (UTC)(link)
If you have to go out in space for maintenance or something, then yeah, a space suit's a pretty good idea. There's only one species I can think of that doesn't need one.

And we don't travel around in rockets. Those wouldn't be fast enough to get anyone anywhere, not to mention they're dangerous. Most people travel around in some kind of ship.
catsgothistongue: (Guess we're doin' this?)

[personal profile] catsgothistongue 2025-07-15 04:28 am (UTC)(link)

[He's always imagined being in the vast vacuum of space was a lot like being submerged beneath the ocean's surface. Dark and frigid, little to nil purchase to find, difficult to breathe... Though there's a lot more in the ocean that can attack or gobble you up.]

That makes sense. Rockets explode. [Kinda wondering what makes a ship less dangerous in that regard but he isn't interested enough to vocalize it.] It must be nice a view up there, gettin' to see the stars everywhere you turn.

[Stargazing was one of his favorite things to do during his childhood after a long day, and even now, he'll lounge up on the dojo's roof to observe the stars. It's peaceful.]

[Quark blinks at that.

...okay admittedly, that's simply been the norm for him so long that he hasn't really thought about whether it's beautiful or not in a long time. But once upon a time...]

...it is, yeah.
